Discovering Three Forms of Shading

This week we will be discovering three forms of shading, and learning three new vocabulary words.

Vocabulary Words to discover:

analogous = similar or comparable to something else ex: An airplane’s joystick is somewhat analogous to the reins on a horse. The emotional impact of a painting by Jackson Pollock is analogous to watching fireworks on the fourth of July.

symmetry = balanced proportions ex: The human face holds symmetry on each side.

asymmetry = the lack or absence of symmetry ex: As Mercury orbits the Sun, it experiences a small torque due to its slight asymmetry in the plane of its orbit.

Your assignment is to complete two drawings demonstrating the shading techniques of hatching, cross hatching and stippling. Like all assignments, they must be completed and submitted by Thursday night of this week. Use a #2 pencil or a darker pencil if you choose.

Below there are three different drawings of lions that I produced. The fourth one is a photo of a lion with a rectangle for you to draw and shade from scratch. Choose one of the three drawings that most interest you below and give the lion or lions shading using this technique. Click and drag the image to your desktop to print out for you to do the assignment. When you are finished. Make an image of it with your cell phone or scan the image in and send it to ihs.db@yahoo.com. Complete the lesson with the lion that you draw from scratch as the bottom of this lesson and do the same. Send it to ihs.db@yahoo.com

Choose one of the three drawing of lions below, add shading to make it come alive and submit it.

You must complete this drawing lesson below attempting to draw the head of a lion from scratch. Do your best. You are not graded on talent but effort. Drag the image to your desktop and print it out to work on. As the directions indicate above, make a cell phone image of your drawing and send it to ihs.db@yahoo.com.
