Ways of Seeing

by John Berger

When you go to elementary school you learn the process of reading by discovering an alphabet. Your perceptions of the world start to change in multiple ways. But what about learning about perceptions and contexts of what you see? Are you taught a visual alphabet? You learn symbols that contain meanings? The importance of a screen is a must, especially your phone screen.

This week we will be studying Ways of Seeing by John Berger. View the video, complete the assessment, and complete the drawing assignment listed below.

Assignment #2: Draw an outline of your head that is 5x7”. Create a list of adjectives that define you. Within the outline creatively place those adjectives inside the outline to create a context self portrait. You are removing your face as a context of who you are and replacing it with perceptions. With each adjective try to create the adjective in such a manner that it reflects its meaning. Photograph the drawing and send it to ihs.db@yahoo.com . Be sure to include your name and class with your photo.
