Review of Principles and
Elements of Design
This assignment is to be created in your sketchbook. You may use and art materials in the classroom.
Your first year of art we discovered the principles and elements of design. For the next two weeks we will be rediscovering those principles on a higher level. You were taught the basic dynamics of drawing. You should now be able to render an object fairly well using contour lines and shading. For this week I have a simple lesson for you. I want you to draw an ice cream cone that is melting. I recommend you make a photo of your hand holding the cone with the ice cream melting down your hand. You can also render the image out of your own mind but it needs to be really good. May I suggest finding an image over the internet. This might be a good opportunity to tell you parents that they need to buy some ice cream for you so you can cash in eating your favorite brand of ice cream.
Details of your assignment:
Use pencil to show hatching, cross hatching, and stippling shading. Your image should be drawn on a regular letter size piece of paper. The drawing needs to depict the texture of wet ice cream melting down your hand. You need not draw the background unless you so desire. Can you show the element of design revealing a full value scale of black to white? What makes your cone special? The images above are all made from an eye level view. Can you change the view from a different angle or not? Drawing a hand is not easy. Try using the geometric shapes approach to the drawing if you wish so that your proportions are great.
