Meet the Masters Series - Johann Vermeer- Girl With a Pearl Earring

One of the most important Dutch paintings of the 17th century with the exception of Rembrandts last self portraits. The peasant girl in this painting may have simply been a face that Vermeer contrived. Mant artists did this practice when they could not afford a model. There is no pearl but it is actually a tin earring appearing as a pearl. Like the Mona Lisa, there are no brush strokes in the painting thus the sfumatio technique was used or just the tops of the brush. In this lesson her image is in black and white allowing the student to use their imagination. An artist bio is included. 8.5×11”
