Jean Francois Millet was a mentor of Vincent Van Gogh. Millet painted the lower-class French farmers and found great beauty in the poverty of spirit in his subjects. He is most famous for his painting, The Sower, which is a French National Treasure. Vincent copied many of his works, including The Sower as well as this painting, First Steps.
