Like the statue David, it was created by one solid block of marble. This was Michaelangelo’s first major work produced around the age of 27. When the sculpture was displayed in an Italian church in Rome it was believed that angels must have created the work of art. No one believed that a young Italian artist such as Michelangelo could create such a piece. Michelangelo became so angry that he broke into the church and carved his name along the sash of Mary.
