GRADING IN MR. BONNELL’S CLASS

Each student receives a grade of either a 60 or 100. This is a pass/fail grading system. This system is based on the fact that all art is subjective and that you cannot mandate talent. Student’s are required to do the work presented to them, however, that work is not graded within a right or wrong paradigm. All student work is placed inside their digital portfolio on line. This allows students to compare and contrast their work with others and to see how other students visually problem solve.

The pass fail system is successful because it motivates students to make an effort in art and try their best. It allows students to raise their grade point average to 100 or it motivates students to make a greater effort or they know they will fail.

RUBRIC USAGES

The standard rubric usages in the visual arts embrace such dynamics as creativity, craftsmanship, following instructions, etc. The grading system within art is mostly subjective. Basically, a student either does the work or they do not. A relationship is established between teacher and student so that the instructions are clear, the student gets support and they produce the work requested. Rubrics work mostly for elementary school age children. They are not needed within my class because it puts an undue stress on the culture unlike math or science.

CULTURE IN MR. BONNELL'S CLASS

As high school student's you have now entered the age of responsibility. High school is no different than a job.

  1. You have a task or position (student).

  2. You have to follow a manner of professional dress (dress code).

  3. You must treat yourself and others with respect or be fired (school non-negotiatables).

  4. You receive a pay check (a diploma or art bucks).

  5. You must maintain keeping your area clean and in order (just as someone did so for you).

  6. You have work that must be accomplished and you receive a grade according to that effort (evidence of work).
